| BAE Systems developed the WaterSentry™
water security alert system, incorporating licensed technology from
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, for use in first alert homeland security,
military and regulatory applications.
WaterSentry™ technology offers a continuous, rapid and broad-trigger
detection capability against water-borne chemical toxins by innovatively
monitoring the natural activity of green algae without the need
for chemical agents to conduct testing. As a result, WaterSentry™
is capable of detecting a chemical toxin's presence at the levels
anticipated during military conflicts, terrorist attacks on civilian
water supplies, or regulatory violations.
Continuous analysis of the water source using only the naturally
occurring algae allows for minimal maintenance. The system features
automated 24-hour testing, test results, collection and analysis
of samples and visual and audible alerts, requiring minimal training.
WaterSentry™ automatically archives time-stamped test results
and stores suspect water samples for more detailed analysis, providing
a cost-effective water supply monitoring capability that complements
high-end laboratory water analysis methods.
The monitoring unit, which houses the sensor sub-system, is ruggedized
and capable of independent operation at remote water sites. The
system communicates over hardwired or wireless networks with a control
station including Ethernet and fiber optics, which provides control
and alarm functions, located at a laboratory or office location.
WaterSentry™ provides a new and valuable level of water security
for military and civilian drinking water supplies, allowing facility
operators, first responders, and homeland security agencies the
opportunity to take early countermeasures against potential threats.
