YORK, PA, October 6, 2003 - United Defense Industries, Inc. (NYSE: UDI), and Sarnoff Corporation today announced a Moving Threat Indicator (MTI) capability that automatically detects motion around military vehicles and alerts personnel to the potential intruders, improving survivability in hostile terrain.

MTI is available as an enhancement to the Eagle Vision™ enhanced situational awareness system introduced last year as “see-through turret visualization” technology.

The MTI product is being shown at the United Defense booth 439 at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Symposium in Washington, D.C., Oct. 6 to 8. Sarnoff is showing related technology at booth 5439.

“MTI is an electronic sentry that keeps constant watch in a full 360-degree circle around the vehicle,” said Ashley Wells, United Defense's Eagle Vision Project Manager. “MTI detects any kind of motion or change in the terrain, and alerts vehicle personnel to the potential hazard.”

The Eagle Vision system gives every soldier in a vehicle the ability to see what lies ahead and behind in a seamless panoramic view of the surrounding area. A helmet-mounted video display with a head tracking system lets each soldier see the appropriate image for a given head position. When MTI is added, personnel get early warning of potential threats via a highlight box in the display and a selectable audio alarm. This alert lets them rapidly identify and locate the threat.

The whole system, including MTI, is now configured for on-vehicle integration. In addition, the system can be enhanced to integrate remote cameras located a distance from the vehicle to cover more terrain.

The two companies first demonstrated Eagle Vision last October at the Association of the U.S. Army's 2002 Annual Meeting and Symposium in Washington, D.C. An enhanced version was installed on United Defense's Hybrid-Electric Drive Transformation Technology Demonstrator (TTD) and shown in February at AUSA's Winter Symposium in Florida.
